The Secure Data Service is fully integrated into the standard registration and data ordering procedures that the UK Data Archive operates for the many services it hosts, including the flagship Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS). Users who wish to access the SDS must first register with the UK Data Archive/ESDS, register a usage, locate the SDS dataset they wish to order in the Data Catalogue, and order as usual.
At this point, the user will be required to complete the ONS Approved Researcher/ESRC Accredited Researcher application. Once approval has been received, the user signs up for SDS training. At the end of the training the user signs the SDS Service Agreement and is given a service-specific user ID and password, which they can then use to access the service from their home institution.
Further information about the terms and conditions of use of the service are available as is a step-by-step guide to applying for access to SDS
For further information about upcoming training sessions, email the Secure Data Service help desk.
The SDS pilot service has launched with the release of the British Household Panel Survey: Waves 1-17, 1991-2008: Secure Data Access version, National Grid Reference (Easting, Northing, OSGRDIND).
Registered users of ESDS, Census.ac.uk, or any other UK Data Archive service can go directly to the Data Catalogue record. Start the process to gain access via SDS through the Download/Order button.
If you are not a registered user, consult the application process page for further information on how to register.
