Other secure data enclaves

It is clear that the Secure Data Service stands on the shoulders of a number of existing secure data enclaves. Some of them are listed below.

NORC Secure Data Enclave Of all data enclaves, SDS most closely resembles the NORC Secure Data Enclave in approach and technological basis. NORC are clear international leaders in the secure remote access field.

Virtual Microdata Laboratory ONS's Virtual Microdata Laboratory has been a major collaborator, and many aspects of the SDS service owe a debt of gratitude to it. We have collaborated on standards for statistical disclosure control, user training, and output checking. VML is clearly the UK's most successful secure data enclave.

The Research Data Centre (FDZ) at the German Institute for Employment Research (IAB) IAB-FDZ is a forward-looking research data centre which is at the heart of European collaborations in the secure data access field.

Sister services

SDS collaborates directly with a number of other services to maximise effectiveness. We have worked particularly closely with:

Economic and Social Data Service ESDS is the major disseminator of social science data for research in the UK, providing access to data under a variety of licensing arrangements. SDS provides another modality of access which is fully integrated into the ESDS registration and ordering systems, providing seamless movement between the services.

Administrative Data and Liaison Service ADLS was established at the same time as SDS and the two were always envisioned as complementary services. SDS and ADLS work together to enable access to personal data for bona fide research purposes.

UK Longitudinal Studies Centre ULSC is the national resource centre for promoting longitudinal research and for the design, management and support of longitudinal surveys. The SDS pilot service focus on ESRC-funded and co-funded longitudinal data resources has ensured our close collaboration.
